Sony announced earlier this month that the PS4 will be available for sale this Christmas.
Will there ever come a time when the quality of the graphics and emergent game experience become so realistic that there won't be a "next console" because we would be unable to perceive the improvements?

Ugh, was disappointed with the marketing direction for PS4 - SOCIAL NETWORKING! Games will be designed so you can share items with each other and play co-op! Etc. etc.!
Multiplayer options are awesome, but not at the expense of a really strong, stand-alone, unadulterated single-player game. It's very similar to how everyone hated how Diablo 3 had to be played online. Diablo 1 and 2 had multiplayer, but also stand-alone single player. I don't want to have to rely on the server working and not having crippling lag to enjoy my single player game! Same goes for new games coming out - I don't want to deal with multiplayer shoe-ins constantly for a game that, really, should have just been single player.
I understand WHY they're doing it - it's what sells at the moment, in the world of 24/7 social connection via mobile networking. But what sells doesn't necessarily make for quality games.

Also, as a response to the question, no. Lack of improved graphics will have little to no bearing, I don't think, on companies producing new platforms and consoles. New iPhones and things come out constantly, and not because they're so amazingly distinct and unignorably improved from their last model that came out a few months ago :b

I'd say no. I think as the game systems near perfect graphics that the shelf life will become longer but that new systems will always come out at some point. Also, I think now that PS4 is coming out this will force Microsoft to announce the new Xbox at E3, although, I think that was the plan anyway.
